Now the children can touch and interact with the cockatoos and macaws of the
National Zoo, as well as take photos with them, thanks to a recent program
of domestication of these animals, many of which walk loose outside the
cages, in the zoo's well-known "children's area."
So far four macaws and two cockatoos have been tamed, and it hopes that the
rest of these birds that are in the Zoological National will be trained
next. First they were domesticated by the American expert Ken Globus, who
traveled to the country to distribute a seminar on the handling and taming
of birds to the personnel who works in the zoo.
In the Children's Zoo there are baby animals, like small camels and bull
calves, separated from the public by an iron door, through which the
children can caress them. The macaws and cockatoos are loose, and tend to
settle in hangers distributed in the area, of such form that stops the
children is still more easy to perhaps approach them and, until leaving
settle in their hands, without danger some.
The Dominican Zoological Society, a non-profit organization, created by
means of presidential decree with the purpose of giving new impulse to the
National Zoo and the conservation of species animals in the country, as much
in freedom as in captivity, also announced that in approximately a month the
great Aviary will be ready ' ' '', a structure of 45.000 square feet,
destined to lodge birds of different species.
The Aviary, that is in repair, is considered greatest of the world and its
original design obtained the first prize in the World-wide Congress of
Architects celebrated in Italy in 1977. In order to advise to the Zoological
National in the repair of the structure he was recently in the country the
North American James Meyer, expert in birds.
